Devour planets as a cosmic worm

WORMHOLE is a paid retro arcade action game developed by Pocket Moon Game. The gameplay centers around a cosmic worm devouring planets and creatures across over 100 handcrafted levels, an action-packed storyline, and an 8-bit art style. This game requires a one-time purchase, with all the game’s content unlocked upon payment.

In WORMHOLE, you can utilize a trio of abilities – DASH, CLAW, and YEEHAW – all special movements and unique attacks. These abilities are all you need to conquer the entire universe, in tune with its equally retro soundtrack that reminisces the distinct style of old arcade games from many decades ago.

Eat everything on your way

WORMHOLE features a stackable perk system designed to enhance the worm's abilities. Depending on your build, it can inflict the best amount of damage to your targets, or produce inconsistent results, adding a layer of unpredictability to your gameplay. The overall art style of the game looks like you’re staring through an old arcade machine with limited colors and early sprite designs. This style can be exciting or boring to others.

The game also features a wide selection of soundtracks fitting for each level. While the 40-plus original tracks provide an energetic vibe, the repetitive nature of some tunes can become slightly grating after a while. You can utilize a set of wormholes to transport yourself into hard-to-reach areas or escape any sticky predicament. You can get combos, and you have a total of three lives in the form of hearts.

While it offers a challenging experience, the difficulty curve can feel somewhat inconsistent. Some levels present a manageable challenge, while others can feel unexpectedly difficult, potentially frustrating players. Furthermore, the lack of substantial long-term goals beyond cosmetic unlocks of over 60 color palettes, and leaderboard competition may leave some players wanting more. Thankfully, the controls are easy to operate, and the system requirements needed to run this game are very forgiving.

A decent modern arcade game

WORMHOLE offers a unique and entertaining experience. The core concept of controlling a cosmic worm is undeniably captivating, and the game delivers a series of challenging and engaging levels. Despite these minor shortcomings, with some refinements to the core gameplay mechanics, a more consistent difficulty curve, and perhaps a more robust progression system, the game could truly shine as a memorable and enduring game for fans of retro arcade-style games.
